Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o and Grammy Award-winning singer Rihanna will co-star in a Netflix movie directed by Ava DuVernay, the filmmaker behind Selma.
It all started two years ago when someone posted a photo of the two on Tumblr at a Miu miu fashion show in 2014 with this caption: “They look like they’re in a heist movie with Rihanna as the tough-as-nails leader/master thief and Lupita as the genius computer hacker.”
Two months ago, and two years after the Tumblr image, the photo resurfaced on Twitter with the following caption: “Rihanna looks like she scams rich white men and lupita is the computer smart best friend that helps plan the scans.”
Turning into a reality
That’s when Nyong’o, Rihanna, DuVernay and Rae got roped into the mix. A representative for Rae told Vanity Fair that the people who helped develop the storyline via social media will be credited in the film in some way.
