Kenya’s motorbyke based on-demand logistics startup Sendy has raised US$2 million in funding to expand its operations, the company’s co-founder told the African Angel Investor Summit in Cape Town.
Launched in 2014, Sendy offers a marketplace for last-mile package delivery and logistics services, allowing customers to send packages and documents using a mobile application that connects them to motorcycle riders, and drivers of vans and pickup trucks. It also has a ride-hailing service.
The startup was one of 20 selected to take part in the World Bank-backed XL Africa accelerator programme, and was pitching to investors at the African Angel Investor Summit last month.
Co-founder and chief operating officer (COO) Malaika Judd told the audience Sendy last week concluded a US$2 million funding round with participation from numerous investors, though the startup is still seeking further funding.
Disrupt Africa reported in November 2015 Sendy was the first startup to receive funding from the US$1 million Safaricom Spark Fund, which aims to support mobile ICT startups in Kenya, and enable the development of innovative mobile solutions. The startup received an undisclosed amount of funding.
